Electric vs Gas Log Splitters

When you have to split smaller logs, and you want to perform the job quickly and quietly, then an electric splitter is your best bet. With an electrically powered motor, an electric log splitter is considerably quieter than a gas one, making it a great choice for use in residential areas.

Its total splitting time is better than the speed of a gas unit. An electric model can reach up to 10 tons of pressure, which is more than enough for smaller logs or infrequent jobs. Electric splitters are lighter and rather portable, and best of all, they don’t cost as much as gas splitters.

When you want power and portability, go with a gas splitter. Various gas models have various outputs, ranging from low to truly huge. Either way, a gas splitter is more powerful than an electric one, which means you can easily cut wood that is harder and larger. Its higher splitting capacity enables you to work with huge logs or stumps as well.

In terms of portability, you can move the unit around as needed, since it does not require an external power source. Though the splitter will be really heavy, most models are fitted with wheels, handles and/ or hitches for attaching to a vehicle.

On the other hand, gas log splitters are quite noisy and can scare off animals. These units need to operate in open spaces so that the fumes they produce do not become harmful. They are also more expensive and require more maintenance than electric splitters. Remember that a gas engine needs fuel and the kind of care that a car’s engine typically requires, so add the maintenance costs to the initial price.
